From September 9th through the 16th the Denver area received roughly 10" of rain (that's what I measured in my rain gauge). Since then we gotten even more rain. As I drive around town and through neighborhoods I see sprinklers running ? Bluegrass lawns need about an inch of water a week this time of year. Even less as it cools down to the 60's. With all the rain we have had 10" of rain translates to 10 weeks worth of water! In my mind this means we don't have to water again for the rest of the growing season. I've turned my sprinklers off since the big rain and my lawn is growing way too fast and is as green as it can be. Depending on what happens weather wise between now and when I get my sprinkler system blown out on October 11th, I might water one more time before the system is winterized.
When taking care of lawns, trees, shrubs and gardens we need to pay attention to the weather. If we get an abundance of rain turn off the water. If it's dry, turn on the sprinklers. Pretty simple. Water is a precious resource that we can't afford to waste. Just because we can water doesn't mean we need to water. If we don't have to irrigate not only do we conserve water but also we don't to pay for it either. I'm sure we all agree that we pay enough for the water we use as it is.
Green side up!
